The World Needs Spirituality, Not Politics

The World Needs Spirituality, Not Politics
This is a profound and thought-provoking statement that accurately reflects the unrest and anxiety of the present age. When we say, “The world needs spirituality, not politics,” it does not mean that order, governance, or administration are unnecessary. Rather, it means that the solution to humanity’s problems lies not in changing external systems, but in transforming the human being from within.
The significance of this idea can be understood through the following points:
1. Politics Divides; Spirituality Unites
The conventional practice of politics is often based on the distinction between “us” and “them,” which gives rise to divisions, factions, and hatred within society. In contrast, spirituality reconnects a person with their true essence and teaches compassion, love, and unity toward fellow human beings.
2. A Remedy for Materialism
The present age is an age of materialism, in which people are constantly chasing worldly possessions. Politics is often a struggle over the distribution of these material resources, whereas spirituality teaches contentment and inner peace, which are the true foundations of happiness.
3. Building Character
Politics can change laws, but it cannot change intentions. Spirituality awakens a person’s morality and conscience. When the individuals of a society become inwardly pure, injustice and corruption begin to disappear naturally.
4. A Solution to Anxiety and Mental Stress
Despite modern technology and material comforts, people today continue to suffer from mental distress. The reason is the thirst of the soul. Spirituality acquaints a person with the purpose of life, bringing stability, tranquility, and peace into one’s existence.
Conclusion
Politics governs the body, whereas spirituality nourishes the soul. As long as the soul remains thirsty, no system of worldly governance (politics) can ever bring complete peace and prosperity. As the poet-philosopher Allama Iqbal also said, if religion (spirituality) is separated from politics, all that remains is “Genghisism”—oppression and barbarity.
